(And How I Help You Achieve Your Goals Anyway)
As we step into a new year, many of us set New Year's resolutions, aiming for positive change in our lives.
Yet, despite the best of intentions, most people struggle to keep up with their resolutions.
Understanding how the brain works can shed light on why this happens - and how we can overcome it.
Why Resolutions are Hard to Stick To
Here is the hard truth: Our brains are wired to seek comfort and avoid change. Our natural tendency is to seek the known; the comfort of safety.
Or in other words: new habits require mental effort.
This effort can feel uncomfortable or overwhelming.
Acutally it DOES feel uncomfortable for most, just some know how to "trick" this feeling better than others.
Our brain is wired to resist this effort. In fact, our subconcious mind does everything it can to keep us warm and cosy and safe. While this is helpful when facing a bear in the forrest, it is not so much fun when we try to introduce new, healthier habits in order to achieve our goals and live the life we always dreamed of.
One way of working around this, is to put all our hope on our motivation and willpower.
But because of our brains behavior, it is making it difficult for us to maintain the motivation needed for long-term success. Also, willpower is finite. This is why this is a broken strategy and we set ourselves up for failure with our New Year's Resolutions more often than not.
Of course it doesn't help that many set too ambitious goals to be achieved within a too short timeframe.
And just to make sure you get me right: It's not about lacking discipline - it's about understanding how to work with your brain and align your goals with your deeper motivations.
