As you might know, Switzerland is heading into school year end.
Which means, that most kids will have a summer break of at least 5 weeks. i.e. 5 weeks without school or childcare and most of their friends spending their days away from home.
Because of that, each year every teacher is pulling for special pre-holiday activities such as full day trips at fancy locations, sports games, concerts, cooking together, pyjama party at school, going to the forest for the day, ... a lot of fun stuff for the kids and a ton of extra stretching for working parents.
Don't get me wrong; I really appreciate the teachers deidcation; it's for sure a ton of extra work for them as well; which is really appreciated!
Yet, what those events all have in common: they need a family's flexibility. More often than not, the invites for those things come on short notice, need extra preparation and re-organisation of the day.
This can be really challenging, especially for moms with a career resp. career moms.
Therefore I've pulled together a 6-Step pre-holiday survival guide:
* take a deep breath
(fact: it's science proofed that this does calm down your stress response immediately)
* can you say no? If so: say no! If not: keep breathing
* is it worth to waste your energy on monaing about the situation
(Hint: it is NEVER worth to waist your time & energy on a self-pitty-party!)
* ask for support; activate your network.
Maybe there are other parents in your childs class you could ask to share child care support or pick-ups? Imagine how happy they are about extra support on this too
* see the positive
(lets face it: very likely this will be an amazing experience for your kiddo!)
* keep going, keep breathing, keep away from pitty-party, keep your energy for where it's worth spending!
What are your survival strategies for dealing with unexpected changes of plans? Let me know in the comments!
